Bocci at Noho Design Week, New York

August 19, 2011  |  by Greenhouse  |  design  |  No Comments

Outdoor Lighting in a new light! This wonderful design was created by designer Omer Arbel of the Canadian company Bocci. This suspended chandelier required the assistance of a crane to construct the display in Noho. Isn’t it delightfully peculiar!

JR

August 16, 2011  |  by Greenhouse  |  design, personal  |  No Comments

Today a friend asked me, “Hey you know the artist JR, well-” I told her I was unaware of who JR was. I then received a look that said “Have you been living under a rock?” After looking at JR’s work I came to the conclusion, that yes I had been living under a rock. JR is the owner of one of the largest galleries in the whole world for the majority of his works are publicly displayed in the streets of various locations throughout the world. Hopefully you were not living under the same rock as I had!

One thing I paticular love about certain artists is their reasoning for producing the pieces, JR is indeed one of these artists. Not only does he create beautiful art and photography, his work helps underprivileged people and voices political objections. I hope you enjoy JR’s famous works, as much as I did today. Learn more about his messages & intentions of his projects here: http://jr-art.net/

A Bubble Hut

July 26, 2011  |  by Greenhouse  |  design, outdoor  |  No Comments

A magnificent design by Pierre Stephane Dumas, the Cristal Bubble allows one to dwell inside with the illusion of being outside. In the words of Dumas, “The ceiling of the bubble has the Milky Way, guests will be able to enjoy this as well as the extraordinary light variation of the sunset and sunrise”. The materials used for this magical creation are recyclable and anti-UV. Within the frame a fan pump electrically circulates fresh air throughout the Bubble and the floors are wooden. There are various design options that allow a children’s room to be added, sidewalls for privacy and a washroom. I know I would be quite pleased if I had my own Bubble Hut.

Bellemo & Cat Residential Cacoon! “This cocoon for weekend living is situated in a bushy coastal hamlet on the Great Ocean Road. The steepness of the site, the dramatic views and the sometimes harsh climate resulted in a object house that whilst protecting from the elements, opened one side to the landscape. In principle this is a matchbox inside an egg, a rectangle within an oval. Inside, the spaces dovetail together with the economic precision of a small boat or caravan”.  Simply Delightful!

Unintentionally blogging twice in the past half hour, I just could not resist. A little morbid, this skull chair goes by the name of “Souviens Toi Que Tu Vas Mourir” or “Remember that you will die” by Pool, (their website is nearly as cool as the chair). This chair would have to be my favourite design symbolising the mortality of all living things yet! At first I saw the chair and didn’t realise it’s symbol at all, with a little meaning the chair simply becomes cooler. I’m a little bit late to show you all, in case you could have sped off to Milan, for the skull chair was a part of the “Nouvelle Vague, the New French Domestic Landscape” exhibition on April 12th to April 17th during Milan Design Week 2011. Sorry guys we seem to have missed it!

Until next time keep smiling and spoiling yourselves x

The Arc House, recently completed by Maziar Behrooz Architecture is a beautifully constructed, architectural masterpiece. The interior and exterior are both exquisitely designed, I personally wouldn’t mind an arc house all of my own. I can only imagine all the living goodies that would look spectacular in every one of the wonderful rooms, especially against the stunning open-plan black kitchen.

Essential for my imaginary arc house would be a clear Aalto Vase Finlandia by Ittalia, with purple flowers upon my kitchen bench…lovely don’t you think?

Rock that Glass

May 6, 2011  |  by Greenhouse  |  brands, design, kitchen  |  No Comments

Illustrating another curious inspiration journey the Norman Copenhagen Rocking Glass, designed by Britt Bonnesen, is a wonderful twist of the tumbler norm. Used to serve cocktails, desserts, coffees, snacks or simply as a decoration with flowers, the rocking glass is uniquely designed with a curved bottom enabling it to rock without falling! Unlike Charlotte Perriand’s photographs, Britt Bonnesen’s creative process was admirably inspired by an old movie about aircraft! Bonnesen devised the idea of the Rocking Glass from the tableware, and in particular the glasses that were created to not spill from the vibrations of the airplanes! The rocking movements make the glass a fun, memorable piece, a delightful creative idea and a loved product at the Greenhouse! It was so loved that we recently sold out, fortunately the Rocking Glass will be coming again soon!

Do you see what I see?

April 27, 2011  |  by Greenhouse  |  design  |  No Comments

It’s always interesting to see what inspires designers and the journey of your possessions before they became your own. I find it amazing how an object as simple as a rock can inspire a creative mind to construct a beautiful, timeless design. The Petit Palais, Paris is currently showcasing such design journeys in an exhibition focused on French designer and architect; Charlotte Perriand (24 October 1903-27 October 1999).  Charlotte was an influential designer of the modern age; she not only introduced the ‘machine age’ but was also the first designer to use photography as a key factor of her inspiration. The exhibition’s main focus is the photography that contributed to her design processes. The visuals are really fantastic for the photographs are positioned directly next to her famous pieces, as if you are seeing just as Charlotte had. The exhibition is continuing from 07 April To 18 September 2011.
